Mike Quast, Instrument Technician, American Crystal Sugar "The 375 contains the specs for all our HART instruments, so we never have a problem communicating with a field device. If we get a new instrument, the software can be upgraded right off the internet, so we don’t have to send a unit away to have new instruments added. That’s a big benefit."
James Brown, Loders-Croklaan "Emerson's new 375 Field Communicator has been in use here for about two months, and it's working out fine. We like the fact that we can update this unit very easily with specifications for both FOUNDATIONTM Fieldbus and HART® instruments. The information can be uploaded right off the internet, so we don't have to send our handheld devices away to a service center have new instruments added. That is the main thing we like about the 375.

"We've had several occasions to use the 375 since it's been here. Even though it has more functionality than the old 275 units we've had for a long time, our technicians have found it just as easy to use. Best of all, it communicates with fieldbus devices as well as with our HART instruments.

"Loders-Croklaan manufactures edible coatings for food products and pharmaceuticals. The 375 Field Communicator should help us to maintain all our field instrumentation in compliance with FDA requirements."
Joe LeClerc, Instrument Mechanic with Canadian Forest Products Ltd. (Prince George, BC, Canada) "It's head and shoulders above the 275 HART communicator, which was previously the standard means of communicating with smart devices in this mill. Of course, this instrument works with both HART and fieldbus devices. We can update this unit in 10 or 15 minutes by downloading information on new instruments from the internet. We formerly sent our 275 units to Vancouver to have them reprogrammed and lost their use for several days."

LeClerc said he uses the tool several times a week, primarily on digital valve positioners but also on transmitters, when some problem has been identified and needs to be resolved. "We frequently go into the mill with a portable communicator to check out certain valves, which are subject to wear or sticking due to the material passing through them. Once the tool is connected to a smart positioner, I can determine the valve's position and verify whether or not it's operating as required. I can also go through the calibration procedure to make sure the positioner is properly calibrated. The 375 is so easy to use, it takes only minutes to accomplish a task in the field. It's become indispensable in our shop."
John Scott, Instrument Mechanic, Husky Energy (Prince George, BC, Canada)

"The 375 Communicator has a nice screen with good backlighting, so it's easy to read under almost any light conditions. It's also easy to interact with the large touch-sensitive screen using a stylus. That's a nice feature.

"After the test unit arrived, we spent about three days bench testing instruments in the shop. We found the 375 very easy to use; it's similar to the 275, only better. I give it thumbs up."

Joe LeClerc, Instrument Mechanic with Canadian Forest Products Ltd. (Prince George, BC, Canada)

"The 375 Communicator has a lot of very good features. For example, it's easy to read the text on the large screen, either in a dark plant or outside in bright light. Although slightly larger than the 275, it's very portable, molds to your hand really well, and has a nice feel. The keypad is set up in such a way that you can work your way through a procedure without even looking at the manual. You can see that the designers put a lot of thought into this instrument.

"It can handle a great deal of information, including a multitude of loops and many, many device descriptions (dd) for both HART and Fieldbus instruments. You can also download device descriptions off the internet straight into the 375, so you can readily get any information you might need without waiting for a disc to arrive. Also, you don't have to send this unit away to be updated. We can upgrade it in 10 or 15 minutes. I like it!"
